Car insurance is expensive, and traffic tickets increase your rates. A single speeding ticket could cost you $1,600 over three years.
Cole & Crangle Law Firm fights traffic tickets. We are your experienced Upstate SC traffic lawyer. Let’s keep your insurance low, keep points off your record, and keep you out of court.

Why do I need a traffic lawyer?

MONEY: A single traffic ticket could increase your insurance premium by over $1,600 over three years. By working with an experienced traffic lawyer, you can keep your insurance low. We resolve many tickets by dismissal or other diversionary programs that do not affect your driving record or insurance.

TIME: We appear on your court date. You don’t need to take off work, find a babysitter, or miss school. Hiring Crangle Law Firm LLC lets you focus on your life. Leave the ticket to the attorneys. On a given court date, there may be over 100 people waiting to speak to the judge. You may spend an entire morning, or afternoon waiting in traffic court. Skip the cattle call, and let an experienced attorney handle it.

NO. If you pay the ticket, you admit guilt and are found guilty. This will impact your insurance and will lead to points on your driving record. People call us every week after they paid the ticket, and now their license is suspended. Hiring an experienced traffic lawyer could have avoided this!

Sometimes the officer reduces the ticket when you are stopped. But often, we can negotiate an even better deal in court. The officers work for the state, they don’t work for you and they can’t give you legal advice. We work for you and can give you legal advice.

What happens if I go to court alone?

You can go to court alone, without an attorney but there are several factors to consider. Attorneys are problem solvers, just like plumbers, electricians, or doctors. You might be able to fix the leaking sink yourself, but hiring a professional really helps.

When you were stopped, the officer gave you a ticket with an initial court date. You must appear on that date and time. You will wait, with everyone else that received a ticket for the officer’s court date. This can be a few people or over a hundred. The Judge will ask you how you plea, and will then listen to your side of the case and the officer’s side of the case. The officer has years of experience prosecuting these cases and speaking with the Judge. You may not.

You’re probably not familiar with the SCDMV and the point suspension system. You also may not know what a “good outcome” is in traffic case or how it affects your driving privileges. We know the answer to these questions. And while we can’t guarantee results, we know the pitfalls and work for the best possible outcome.

If you handle your own ticket, what outcome would you seek? Are you familiar with the South Carolina Rules of Evidence and Criminal Procedure? Do you know the technology and legal standards employed in every traffic stop? How will the SCDMV process your ticket? How will your insurance process the ticket? Most people don’t know the answers to these questions, and that’s ok. We’re here to help.

How do points work in SC?

South Carolina employs a point system for drivers. The basics are this:
Everyone starts with 0 points on your record. If you accumulate 12 points or more, your Driver’s License will be suspended. After one year, half of the Points “fall off”. After the second year, the other 1/2 of the points fall off your record.

For example: If you’re charged with a 6-point speeding ticket on January 10, 2020, then 3 points fall off on January 10, 2021 and the other 3 points fall off on January 10, 2022. Leaving you with 0 points on January 11, 2022.

Preventing points on your record is critical for insurance purposes and to keep your Driver’s License. Our goal is to dismiss the case or reduce the ticket.

The fine amount varies based on the number of points:

The speeding ticket fines are:

  • 6-Point Ticket: Max fine $440
  • 4-Point Ticket: Max fine $180
  • 2-Point Ticket: Max fine $75

Insurance companies DO NOT use the point system. They look for moving violations. This is because points vary from state to state. For example, reckless driving is a 6-point ticket in SC, while it’s a 4-point ticket in NC.

How to read your ticket?

Below is an example of a ticket. It’s broken into sections by color:

  • Red: Driver’s information.
  • Orange: Vehicle information and owner of the vehicle.
  • Green: Court section lists the location of the court and the your court date.
  • Blue: Violation section lists the date of the violation and what law the driver is accused of violating.
  • Pink: Officer section lists the arresting officer, and the fine amount.
